USC Awarded Work-Life Seal of Distinction;
Center for Work and Family Life Proud of It's Part in Creating Work-Life Excellence at USC

WorldatWork's Alliance for Work-Life Progress (AWLP) is proud to announce that University of Southern California has earned the Work-Life Seal of Distinction for 2014. The seal is a unique mark of excellence designed to identify organizational success in work-life effectiveness.

University of Southern California is one of 66 organizations to be honored March 20 at the Work-Life Awards Luncheon at the AWLP Work-Life Forum in Baltimore. USC's Center for Work and Family Life (CWFL) played a key role in the university's win, but CWFL Executive Director John Gaspari says the award recognizes the whole university.

"For nearly 35 years, USC has demonstrated a steady commitment to assisting its faculty and staff integrate their work and personal lives through its policies, programs and personnel practices," Gaspari notes.

"This year's Work-Life Seal of Distinction honorees are an impressive group of employers that

clearly understand the business value of investing in the people who do the work," said Kathie Lingle, WLCP, executive director, WorldatWork's Alliance for Work-Life Progress.

Begun in 2012, the AWLP Seal of Distinction assesses the seven categories of work-life effectiveness that comprise a best-in-class work-life portfolio in today's workplace:

  • Caring for dependents
  • Health and wellness
  • Workplace flexibility
  • Financial support for economic security
  • Paid and unpaid time off
  • Community involvement
  • Transforming organizational culture.

This year's winners represent a variety of industries — including education, finance, government, health, law, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals — and hail from 20 states and the District of Columbia. The 2014 list includes 24 new companies and shows 21 companies returning to the list from previous years.

President's Award for Staff Achievement

John Gaspari, a fifteen year employee of the University of Southern California and a graduate of the USC School of Social Work, was notified April 8th that he is being recognized as the 2013 winner of the President's Award for Staff Achievement at the university [view video of the notification].

About the Award

USC President Max Nikias presents the award each year to a current, full-time staff member who has made outstanding contributions to university life, enhanced morale, and demonstrated an enthusiastic Trojan spirit. John will be honored at the Staff Recognition Luncheon held April 24th.

The types of qualities that the President’s Award for Staff Achievement seeks to reward includes:

  • Contributes to university life
  • Improves experiences for students, faculty, staff, alumni or community members
  • Goes “above and beyond”
  • Enhances morale at USC
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for and commitment to the Trojan Family

About the Honoree

John Gaspari received his Masters in Industrial Social Work from USC in 1988 and since that time, has made the workplace the sole focus of his professional practice.

John has over 20 years of experience as an employee assistance professional, mental health practitioner,

organizational and management consultant, workplace behavioral health educator and program administrator.

He currently serves as the Executive Director of the USC Center for Work and Family Life, which is the University’s employee assistance, work-life and wellness program. In this role, he also provides field instruction and clinical training for graduate students and post-graduate practitioners.

Mr. Gaspari is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Certified Employee Assistance Professional, and a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. He is a member of the USC School of Social Work’s administrative leadership team and serves on several standing committees at USC including the Provost’s Advisory Committee for Work and Family Life, the Personnel Council, and the Employee Benefits Advisory Committee.

Most recently, John created and leads the USC Disaster Mental Health Response Team, a multidisciplinary group of mental health professionals, emergency response specialists, academics and clergy from across the University community.

Mr. Gaspari was the recipient of the 2011 Jules Levine Distinguished Field Education Award. The annual award is issued by the USC School of Social Work for excellence in field education. John was previously recognized in May 2008 with the Distinguished Service Award in Field Education, also from the School of Social Work.

University of Southern California Honored For Workplace Practice That Promotes Health And Safety


The University of Southern California was presented with a Best Practices Honor from the American Psychological Association (APA) at the annual Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards ceremony held March 9 in Washington, D.C. The University of Southern California was recognized for its Center for Work and Family Life that helps the university community successfully address work-life challenges.

The University of Southern California has shown its commitment to employees by building and maintaining the Center for Work and Family Life that offers an array of services including counseling, stress assessments, referrals for dependent care and much more. In

addition, the university's Healthy Trojan website features campus resources dedicated to enhancing psychological, emotional, intellectual and social wellness. These practices are examples of a health and safety initiative, one component of a psychologically healthy workplace.

The University of Southern California was one of nine organizations to receive the Best Practices recognition in 2013. The organization is a previous winner of the California Psychological Association’s state-level Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award in 2012, qualifying it to be nominated for APA’s Best Practices Honors.

CPA awards USC for employee happiness

The California Psychological Association recently declared USC a psychologically safe work environment after the CPA determined USC met certain standards in employee involvement, safety and growth.

The university’s Center for Work and Family Life helped coordinate the application process for the CPA’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award, which the university carried out two other times, most recently in 2008.

CWFL Director Receives Field Education Award

Executive Director of the Center for Work and Family Life, John Gaspari, was honored by the USC School of Social Work with the 2011 Jules Levine Memorial Award for Distinguished Field Instruction.

John, a graduate of the USC School of Social Work (MSW, 1984), and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, provides clinical supervision and support for social work students who participate in an internship with CWFL.

John was previously recognized in May 2008 with the Distinguished Service Award in Field Education from the USC School of Social Work.

New lab helps faculty reduce stress

Working at a top-tier research university can be a stressful job, but now faculty and staff members at USC have a chance to relieve that stress by visiting the Stress Reduction Lab at the USC Center for Work and Family Life.

The Center for Work and Family Life strives to help faculty and staff members successfully balance their work and personal lives, and the Stress Reduction Lab is their newest method of helping to create that balance.

The Stress Reduction Lab features a program called emWave, which uses a type of biofeedback technology that measures heart rate through a finger or ear clip sensor plugged into a computer. That heart rate measurement gives a sense of how relaxed or stressed a person is.
